NEW BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT

Announcing availability of a book titled: Skeen Families of Tennessee, Virginia, New York, & Scotland. Although my book is about people named Skeen that lived in the states described in the title there is much data included about descendants who migrated to other parts of the country. Certainly the data includes information about our ancestors who lived in Scotland so we are international in scope. The data takes us back to the Baronies of Skene in Scotland in the late 1100s and 1200s.  As you can see the Skeen name is derived from the Scottish spelling of Skene. In my research I have found more than 23 variant ways to spell the name. And many of these variant spellings are included in the book.

The book is printed in 12 point print on white 50 pound acid free paper in a format of eight and one-half by eleven inches (8.5 x 11). The 12 point print makes it easier on the eyes while reading. The book is contained in approximately 600 pages overall.

The book covers were designed to capture the essence of our Skeen tradition by using the modern Clan Skene tartan as a background with the Coat of Arms superimposed on the front cover while the Family Crest is superimposed on the back cover. The Coat of Arms and Family Crest on the tartan parchment gives a rich contrast and leaves one with the sense that our Scottish family has been, and will continue to be with us for a long time. This book will look great on your coffee table in the living area of your home.

The book is broken down into chapters including a Preface, followed by thirty major chapters about different descendants, three appendices, and an Index consisting of some 140 pages. This is a very elaborate index and is cross referenced by the descendant and their respective spouse and then that is reversed by indexing the name of the descendant’s spouse followed by the descendant’s name. In all cases the full first, middle names, and surnames are used, where known.

The book contains both textual and graphical data (images). Most all images are black and white photos of descendants, their homes, their churches, their grist mills, their country stores, etc. There are a total of 139 photos mingled throughout the different pages. I have attempted to place the photos as near the subject as possible. Footnotes are used extensively to show references of important dates, places, and people.

For the trained genealogist I have used The Modified Register System to show relationships between each blood generation using superscript notations. The Modified Register System is well defined in the book.

The books should be available for shipment about 1 December 2005. The date would suggest they would make a nice Christmas present.

The prices are as follows: The soft back books are $40.00 while the hard back books are $50.00.  Please include $5.00 for Shipping and Handling Fees; therefore, the total costs are $45.00 and $55.00 respectively. Only Money Orders, Cashiers Checks, and Personal Checks will be accepted.

Please make all instruments payable to A. Tom Skeen.
